The carbon atom has the property of forming carbon chains. They are classified into open closed or mixed.
Open chains are also called acyclic or aliphatic chains. They have two ends or chain ends.
They are classified according to the presence of a heteroatom or not between carbons.
- homogeneous - has no heteroatoms between carbons.
- heterogeneous - has heteroatom between carbons.
Open chains can also be classified according to the presence of radicals (branches) in the carbon chain.
- normal - has no radicals.
- branched - has radicals.
Open carbon chains can be classified according to the type of chemical bond.
saturated - when there are only simple bonds in the carbon chain.
unsaturated - when there are double or triple bonds in carbon chains.
