Alcohols can be classified in two ways:
- according to the position of the hydroxyl
- according to hydroxyl number
Follow the explanations below for each of them.
Primary alcohol - has the primary carbon-linked hydroxyl.
Secondary alcohol - has secondary carbon-linked hydroxyl.
Tertiary alcohol - has tertiary carbon-linked hydroxyl.
- Monoalcohol - alcohol containing a hydroxyl.
- Alcohol or diol - alcohol containing two hydroxyls.
- Tri-alcohol or triols - alcohol containing three hydroxyls.
